Sunday 29th September – bike and walk *** The search for the Menhir la conche vert - Sunny

Left Noirmoutier via the bridge this time and stopped at the beach just over on the other side. Beautiful beach with sand dunes, views of Ile d’Yeu and virtually emptyJ Drove on down the Vendee as close to the sea as we could get. Lots of built up areas and camp sites but a surprising amount of nice beaches and sand dunes too. We stopped at McDonalds for the usual uploading etc.. Carried on finally stopping at Brem sur Mer beach for lunch and a walk on the lovely beach either side of a sluice where a river comes out. There were two men surfing so we watched them for a while. We drove back to the outskirts of the town of Brem sur Mer and parked on the river bank. We got the bikes off as we had decided to cycle to the Menhir la conche vert (Standing stone) in the forest which runs behind the beach. I cant resist a standing stone:) The cycle track was great, all through the pine forest and then through a tunnel under the road and along country lanes passing horses and allotments. We decided we had gone too far so went back to try another route and finally found the car park for the Menhir. There was a distinct lack of sign posts but we went the way we thought. We decided we had again gone to far and asked a French couple who said it was in the car park! We returned there but no joy so set out the other way. We had to ditch the bikes and walk because it got very sandy. We found a sign and followed the arrow but ended up at another car park! Followed a few more signs back the way we had come, collected the bikes and after a couple more dead ends finally found the bloomin thing …………….. we had actually passed it twice the first direction we had tried and had missed it – mainly because we were looking at the signpost for clues!!! We did laugh! Still we did it and that made cycling back better than returning disappointed:) Had our tea and are staying here tonight.

Monday 30th September – Travelling + 3 small walks – cloudy with rain:(

Spent the day slowly travelling south, through the very built up Le Sables-d’Olonne to the beach at Bourgenay where we spent two holidays when the boys were younger. We had a long walk there then after a shop at Lidl, carried on down the coast stopping at the Dolmen Grand Bouillac in the rain:( We headed for La Tranche-sur-mer because our map said there was a good view point at the lighthouse but it was hardly possible to even find the lighthouse for the holiday houses, one way streets and no entry signs:( As this proved hopeless as a lunch spot we carried on to La Faute-sur-mer which was a lot smaller and with a car park behind the sand dunes. After lunch we went for a walk down to the beach with the umbrella. A little further along was the Pointe de l’Aiguillon where there was a view point and nature reserve. The road leading to this point was unusual in that it was a sea wall with traffic lights at either end so that if the red light was showing it was dangerous to cross so strictly forbidden! It was ok today so we were able to get to the end, and have a good walk with the binoculars. Not very much to see here but the surrounding fields had lots of kestrals and buzzards, herons and Lapwings to watch. We found the perfect place to stay just behind the sand dunes.
